Viet Nam helps boost ASEAN - EU ties

Viet Nam has marked the success of its Chairmanship of the ASEAN Brussels Committee (ABC) with a culinary art festival in Brussels, drawing in embassy staffs from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

From January to June of 2006, Viet Nam held the ABC rotary leadership, which has now been taken over by the Philippines for the next term.

During its chairmanship, Viet Nam helped hold a number of meetings between ABC members and high-ranking officials from European Union agencies Headquartered in Belgium as well as from the host country.

Most noteworthy were the meetings with Director General of EC General Affairs and External Relations Council Eneko Landaburu, EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson, and Director General for Trade David O'Sullivan as well as a working session with export agencies in Belgium's Wallonie.

The ABC has also held working sessions with the Ambassador-Head of the Mission of Finland, who is holding the EU rotary chairmanship, and the Ambassador-Head of the Mission of Germany, who will take over the EU leadership for the next term.

These activities have contributed to strengthening friendship and multi-faceted cooperation between ASEAN, especially the ABC, and the EU, said participants at a meeting to hand over the rotary chairmanship of the ABC to the Philippines.

At the event, Phan Thuy Thanh, Vietnamese Ambassador to Belgium and Head of the Mission to the EU, expressed thanks to her colleagues at the ABC for their valuable support to Viet Nam during its rotary chairmanship.

She also wished the friendship and comprehensive cooperation within the ABC and between the ABC and EU as well as between the ASEAN and the EU further development.(VNA)
