EU releases Blue Book on assistance to Viet Nam's development

(VNA) - "Blue Book" - an annual official report of the European Union's assistance to Viet Nam's development has been released, announced Robert Gordon, Ambassador of the UK which is currently President of the EU, at a press briefing in Ha Noi on Oct. 27.

 According to the book, the EU, the largest donor of Viet Nam, disbursed 326.8 million euros through its programmes and projects in the country in 2004. Of the figure, non-refundable aid made up about 76 percent while credits and loans - 23.6 percent. The cumulative commitments for on-going EU projects in Viet Nam amounted to 2,869 million euros in 2004, of this 1,118 million euros have been disbursed. Apart from providing bilateral ODA to Viet Nam, EU member countries have also channelled ODA funds through multilateral financial institutions and other donors.

The book highlighted the EU's commitments to continue its support to Viet Nam's development targets, focusing on Viet Nam's efforts of integrating into the international economy, especially joining the WTO, enhancing human development and eradicating hunger and alleviating poverty.

From the first report published in 1999, the book has become a valuable source of information for research work on ODA in Viet Nam. It is a basis for dialogues, cooperation and coordination among donors./.
