EU appreciates Viet Nam’s role in EU-ASEAN FTA negotiations
Members of the European Parliament said that Viet Nam, as the facilitator for ASEAN member countries, can play an important role in the free trade agreement (FTA) negotiation process between the European Union (EU) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Members of the European Parliament’s International Trade Committee mission headed by Committee’s first Vice Chairwoman, Corien Wortmann-Kool, made the remark at a press conference in Ha Noi on October 4 when they wrapped up their two-day working visit to Viet Nam.
They said that Viet Nam could “give proper priorities to the negotiations” towards the building of a trade deal aimed at boosting EU-ASEAN trade relations, as well as between the EU and Viet Nam.
“The relations are of mutual benefit to the EU, ASEAN and Viet Nam. As for the European Parliament, we see that it is necessary to further open the market for goods and services from all three sides,” Vice Chairwoman Wortmann-Kool said.
Wortmann-Kool spoke highly of working sessions with representatives of the Vietnamese Government and the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
She said that during the meetings, the two sides agreed that Viet Nam needs to invest more in improving the quality of the labour force and investment environment.
Members of the European Parliament delegation acknowledged the Southeast Asian nation’s efforts in opening up its economy and integrating into the global market. However, they called upon Viet Nam to do more in intellectual property rights protection.-(VNA)
