Vietnam ready to participate in IPU progammes

VNA - The Vietnamese National Assembly will implement all its commitments and is ready to participate in cooperation programmes of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), according to a senior legislator.

NA Vice Chairwoman, Tong Thi Phong, made this statement during a Feb. 26 reception in honour of an IPU delegation that is on a six-day working visit to Vietnam, which concludes on Feb. 27.

Phong called upon the IPU, together with the United Nations, to continue its support for Vietnam in the future. The Vietnamese legislative body promised to work closely with the government to implement UN-funded projects, as well as striving to fulfill its development goals in the country, she stressed.

In recent years, the Vietnamese legislature has received assistance from the UN and IPU, provided through programmes focusing upon legislation consultancy, capacity building for elective deputies and increasing the supervisory efficiency of elected bodies, Phong added.

The lawmaker noted that the selection of Vietnam as one of eight countries to implement the “One UN” initiative, coupled with the execution of UN-backed programmes, have benefited its people and helped the country to promote socio-economic development, healthcare, education, and increased protection of its women.

On behalf of the delegation, Melegue Traore, a member, expressed his desire to gain further information regarding the Vietnamese NA’s role in accelerating and supporting the performance of UN development projects and initiatives.

Traore said that his delegation had previously attended effective working sessions with UN bodies in Vietnam, as well as the country’s government and NA agencies.

Vietnam’s successful development experiences should be used as examples for other nations to follow, he added./.
