Cambodia to continue helping Viet Nam to search for soldiers' remains


HCM City, Oct. 26 (VNA) - A memorandum of understanding (MOU) on further Viet Nam-Cambodia cooperation in searching and repatriating Vietnamese soldiers' remains in Cambodia, in the 2004-05 dry season, was signed in Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday.

 

Signatories were lieutenant-general Nguyen Van Chia, Commander of Viet Nam's Military Zone 7, and Senator Chey So Phon, Vice Chairman of the Cambodian Government's commission on the search for and repatriation of remains of  Vietnamese volunteers in Cambodia.

 

Under the MOU, the two sides will continue joining efforts to create favourable conditions for Vietnamese searching teams, local authorities, armed forces and people in Cambodia to search for and repatriate Vietnamese volunteers' remains.

 

Since 2001, with assistance from the Cambodian side, Vietnamese searching teams have repatriated  3,416 sets of Vietnamese soldiers' remains, with 256  having had their names identified.

 

The fourth searching stage will take place from Oct. 30, 2004-April 24, 2005.
