Viet Nam-US relations

Ha Noi (VNA) - Viet Nam attaches importance to its ties with the United States, and wants to build long-term and stable relations on the basis of mutual respect for national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, non-interference into each other's internal affairs, and the equality and interests of each nation.

So said permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung while receiving the new US Ambassador to Viet Nam, Michael W.Marine, who paid a courtesy visit to the former on Jan. 31.

Viet Nam-US relations have continually developed over the past few years in the fields of economics, politics, health care, science and technology, education, and security and military affairs, despite some outstanding issues, stressed the Deputy PM, adding that Viet Nam wishes to further boost the two countries' bilateral cooperation, including cooperation on the MIA issue, and in HIV/AIDS and drug prevention activities.

Ambassador Marine affirmed that he will, in his term of office in Viet Nam, strive to promote cooperation between the two countries, particularly on issues of mutual concern, such as Viet Nam's accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and specific economic development projects, and contribute to the development of the Viet Nam-US relationship in the interests of the two people and for peace, stability and development.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien has sent a message of congratulations to Condoleezza Rice on her appointment as Secretary of State of the United States.
