State leader meets UNICEF official

Ha Noi (VNA) - Vice President Truong My Hoa affirmed Viet Nam's viewpoint of considering the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) as a companion in its endeavours towards development.

She made the affirmation while receiving in Ha Noi on Mar. 7 Anupama Rao Singh, UNICEF Regional Director for East Asia and the Pacific, who is currently on a working visit to Viet Nam.

The State leader praised UNICEF's assistance to and cooperation with Viet Nam over the past 30 years.

She reaffirmed that the Vietnamese State has adopted many programmes in various fields, such as infrastructure construction, production promotion, education, and child care, with the aim of eliminating poverty by 2010.

She said that Viet Nam is working hard to address children-related issues, including malnutrition, Agent Orange-related health problems, the improvement of studying conditions and the building of recreation centres for children.

Rao Singh expressed thanks to the Vietnamese Government for creating every condition for UNICEF to smoothly operate in the country, and highlighted Viet Nam's effort in poverty reduction and child care as a model for other countries to follow.

In talks with the Vietnamese State leader, Rao Singh pointed to issues to which Viet Nam needs to pay more attention, such as narrowing the living gap between children in the cities and countryside, helping young people access high-quality education, creating jobs, and protecting children from labour abuse, trafficking and HIV/AIDS infection./.
