Viet Nam - US relations

Washington (VNA) - The US State Department on March 15 did not issue any "sanctions" against Viet Nam even though there has been pressure from some Vietnamese reactionary forces and some American politicians, according to local sources.

State Department spokesman Adam Ereli said the US administration needed more time to evaluate the situation in Viet Nam. Viet Nam was designated by the State Department as a "country of particular concern'' last September, along with Saudi Arabia and Eritrea, the sources reported.

All three had made progress towards greater religious tolerance. Privately, one official said Viet Nam had progressed more than the other two, the sources said.
