Vietnamese executive proposes establishment of regional on-line newspaper

(VNA): The new chairman of the e-ASEAN Business Council (e-ABC), Nguyen Anh Tuan, presented a project to establish an online newspaper for people of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) at the council's second meeting in Ha Noi on Sept. 25.

The on-line paper, named AsiaNews.Net, will be developed based on a partnership between online newspapers of ASEAN countries, communication organisations and international business and academic communities, said Tuan, who is also director of the VASC software and media company of Viet Nam.

The regional online newspaper will be a bridge to connect people, businesses, and governments of ASEAN countries and a gateway for ASEAN to the world, the executive added.

The establishment of the AsiaNews.Net will realise an initiative suggested by Viet Nam on building a common electronic information system for ASEAN.

The initiative aims to increase IT potential in exchanging information among member countries, boost comprehensive cooperation between ASEAN countries, and enhance ASEAN's common voice in the world.

The meeting of the e-ABC, organised under the framework of the fifth ASEAN Telecommunications and IT Ministers Meeting (TELMIN 5), saw the participation of nearly 30 delegates representing the e-commerce and telecommunication communities from seven ASEAN countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam.

The results of the meeting will be reported to TELMIN 5, which will kick off in Ha Noi on Sept. 26.
