UN ready to support Viet Nam's flood relief efforts

An UN official has said that the United Nations agencies stand ready to provide assistance to help Viet Nam recover from devastation caused by floods this year.

UN Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator Margareta Wahlstrom made the remark in a letter to Permanent Representative of Viet Nam to the United Nations Le Luong Minh.

"On behalf of the United Nations, I offer our deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, as well as the people who lost their homes and those who suffered injury as a result of the floods," Wahlstrom said in the letter which dated August 15.

She said the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is prepared to mobilise its emergency response mechanisms in support of the Vietnamese Government.

The official pledged that the UN will continue to monitor the emergency response and OCHA will endeavour to keep the international community informed of the situation.-(VNA)
