PM approves construction of Vietnam-Laos border region by 2020


Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on July 9 approved the plan on construction of Vietnam-Laos border zone by 2020, identifying it as an area for economic exchange.

The targeted region covers more than 95,240 sq.km across 10 provinces of Dien Bien and Son La in the north, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh and Quang Tri, Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Nam in the central Kon Tum in the Central Highlands.

It will become a location for forestry development and protection and biodiversity, as well as agricultural production and developing processing, mining, construction material industries. It will also be home to key irrigation and hydro power projects.

The plan also provides space and technical infrastructure development for the region and projects receiving prioritised investment in the five and ten-year period.

Prioritised policies will be built to attract domestic and foreign investment in developing border economic zones, economic zones, industrial parks, tourism sites, training and medical centres, trade centres and other infrastructures in urban areas of the Vietnam-Laos border region.
