Switzerland helps Vietnam in trade capacity building

Hanoi (VNA) – Switzerland will grant 2.4 million USD to a project on trade capacity building in key export sectors of Vietnam in the post World Trade Organisation (WTO) accession period.

An agreement to this effect was signed by the Vietnamese Ministry of Sciences and Technology, the Swiss Embassy and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), in Hanoi on July 28.

The project is considered the second phase with the first phase titled “Market Access Support through the Strengthening of Capacities related to Metrology, Testing and Conformity” was carried off from 2004 to 2007 to help improve Standards, Metrology, Testing and Quality (SMTQ) capacities with a budget of approximately 1 million USD.

Deputy Minister of Sciences and Technology Tran Quoc Thang said that the second phase, developed on the achievements of the first one, is expected to contribute to promoting exports of safe and environmentally sound products from Vietnam to international markets.

The second phase is titled “Post WTO Accession Support to Vietnam - Technical Barriers to Trade/Sanitary and Phytosanitary Compliance Capacity Development Related to Key Export Sectors”.

It will concentrate on building capacity in physical conformity infrastructure for internationally recognised calibration and testing services to industry, particularly in export sectors such as textiles and garments and food products; and formulating technical regulations in several manufacturing sectors for implementation of the Law on Standards and Technical Regulations.

The project is part of the UN’s “One Plan”, a joint action programme between the Government and all 14 resident UN organisations in Vietnam through 2010.
