Vietnam encourages establishment of cooperatives

(VNA) – National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong has stated that Vietnam encourages the establishment of cooperatives and has created conditions for cooperatives to participate in national programmes to boost the country’s socio-economic development.

The NA Chairman made these remarks at the eighth International Cooperative Alliance (ICA)’s Regional Assembly for the Asia-Pacific region, with a theme of “Bringing into full play the advantages of cooperatives during the global economic crisis” in Hanoi on Dec. 3.

He described the event as a valuable opportunity for Vietnamese cooperatives to share and learn from the experiences of their peers from other regional countries and further boost their future cooperation in a long-term, sustainable manner.

The NA Chairman expressed his hope that the regional assembly would propose measures and means to enhance cooperatives’ competitiveness and increase their contributions to overall socio-economic development.

“In the context of regional and world economies facing numerous difficulties and challenges, if cooperatives are given the encouragement, conditions and means, they are an effective solution to the implementation of socio-economic targets,” Chairman Trong said.

He told the participants that Vietnam has close to 18,000 cooperatives and cooperative unions, and more than 320,000 cooperative groups, which have so far generated jobs for 12.5 million people, mainly in the farming sector in rural areas.

Li Chung Sheng, President of the ICA for the Asia-Pacific region, said the Regional Assembly for Asia-Pacific works for the benefit of some 530 million members of 59 cooperative organisations from 22 regional countries.

The Regional Assembly for the Asia-Pacific region has been tasked with actualising the ICA ’s activities and formulating policies to create benefits for the ICA , as well as member cooperatives in the region.
