Viet Nam works to contribute more to ASEAN

VGP – Deputy PM, FM Pham Binh Minh has written an article in celebration of the 20th anniversary of Viet Nam's accession to ASEAN (July 28, 1995) and the 48th founding anniversary of ASEAN (August 8, 1967).

In the article, the Deputy PM referred to opportunities and challenges, advantages and disadvantages for Viet Nam when joining ASEAN.
He proposed five solutions for the nation to effectively participate in ASEAN and take full advantages of the Association when it is entering the new development period.

Firstly, Viet Nam needs to increase awareness of the strategic importance of participating in ASEAN to enhance the human resources. The Southeast Asian area and ASEAN are strategic to Viet Nam due to their direct security and development attachment. The region and the group are a key factor for Viet Nam to expand diplomatic relations and international integration.

Cooperation with ASEAN, both multi-lateral and bilateral, is identified as a crucial part in the Party and State’s independent, self-control and multi-lateral diplomacy.

Secondly, Viet Nam has to do her utmost to establish a united ASEAN and uphold its role in the region. Viet Nam can bring into full play her advantages to propose specific initiatives and projects.

Thirdly, relevant agencies need to closely follow principles as well as propose policies, measures and methods suitable with the scope of ASEAN to overcome shortcomings and narrow differences with the aim of increasing the quality of diversified united ASEAN for benefits of all nations and the region.

Cooperation with ASEAN is under the control of the Government, which is also required the active participation and close coordination from relevant ministries, agencies, businesses and people at all levels.

Activities in ASEAN, which are diversified and complex, spreading from politics-security to economics, culture and society, are not only within the 10 nations in ASEAN but also beyond to other partners in the world.

The international and regional integration process, therefore, contains new and complex issues, affecting all levels in society, the Deputy PM said.

Fifthly, law and regulation adjustments must be carried out regularly to facilitate the realization of commitments in the region and enhance communications about ASEAN and Viet Nam’s accession to the Association.

He expected that, with her experience, political determination and higher status in the region and in the world, Viet Nam will uphold her role and coordinate with ASEAN in establishing a united ASEAN Community to contribute to regional peace, security and prosperity.
