Vietnam strongly protest and reject the so-called “Vietnam Human Rights Act of 2004”

ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT BY MR. LE DZUNG, THE SPOKESMAN

OF THE VIETNAMESE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS ON 20th JULY 2004

Some correspondents: What is
Vietnam’s reaction to the approval of “Vietnam Human Rights Act of 2004” by the US House of Representatives ?

Answer:

The Vietnamese Government and people strongly protest and reject the so-called “Vietnam Human Rights Act of 2004” that has just been approved by the US House of Representatives. The Act contains distorted and fabricated information on
Vietnam.

We consider the Act a rude interference into internal affairs of
Vietnam, hurting the feeling and harming the dignity of the Vietnamese people. Running counter to the trend of improvement and development in the cooperation and friendship between Vietnam and the US, the move is totally against the interests of the two people.

We call upon the US Administration, Senators, organizations and individuals to take appropriate measures to prevent the Act from being approved at the US Senate.

Over the past years,
Vietnam has recorded important achievements in numerous fields, creating better premises and material foundations to exercise and bring into full play the citizen’s fundamental rights and freedoms. The international community has recognized Vietnam as one of the leading countries in the cause of hunger eradication and poverty alleviation where political and social environment is very stable and human rights are ensured. Since 1986, over 40 codes of law and more than 100 decrees and thousands of other law documents, including those important documents related to human rights, have been enacted. These legal documents have constitutionalized human rights and become means to regulate social relations in a state governed by the rule of law whose core goal is for the people.
