Welcome the U.S. President G. Bush’s decision to waive Jackson-Vanik amendment for Vietnam

ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENTS BY MR. LE DZUNG, THE SPOKESMAN
OF THE VIETNAMESE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS ON
7th JUNE 2004

Thanh nien (Youth) newspaper: Can you please comment on the U.S. President’s recent annual waiver of Jackson-Vanik amendment? Given the normal relations between Vietnam and the United States and the signing of the bilateral trade agreement, why is this amendment still in existence?

Answer:

Vietnam welcomes the U.S. President G. Bush’s decision to waive Jackson-Vanik amendment for Vietnam, considering it a step in the right direction that continues to facilitate the implementation of the Vietnam - US bilateral trade agreement.

We believe that this decision will receive extensive support from the US Congress, political circles and people.

However, Vietnam hopes that in the future the US side will take into consideration permanent abolition of Jackson-Vanik amendment against Vietnam because it has become out of date and inappropriate for the current relationship between the two countries.
