China’s military exercise in the Hoang Sa archipelago is a violation of Vietnam’s sovereignty

On 23 November, 2007, in response to question by VNA concerning Vietnam’s reaction to reports saying that from 16 to 23 November 2007, China held military exercise in the Hoang Sa archipelago of Vietnam, Mr. Le Dung, the Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated:

Vietnam has adequate historical evidence and legal foundations to proclaim its sovereignty over Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos. China’s military exercise in the Hoang Sa archipelago is a violation of Vietnam’s sovereignty, not in line with the common perception of high-ranking leaders, or the spirit of the last meeting between the two Prime Ministers on the sidelines of the 13th ASEAN Summit in Singapore, failing to benefit the bilateral friendship.

Vietnam always wishes to strengthen its friendly neighbourliness with China, resolve all disputes between the two countries through peaceful means in accordance with international law and practice, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the 2002 Declaration of Conduct (DOC) in the Eastern Sea, in order to maintain peace and stability in the Eastern Sea and the region.
