Personal
 
Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Hồ Xuân Sơn joined the Foreign Service in 1978. He has served in many important positions, built up profound experience in bilateral diplomacy, particularly with partners in Northeast Asia.
 
He was born in 1956 in Quang Tri and married with two children.
 
Education
 
He graduated in 1978 from Peking University.
He is fluent in both Chinese and English.
 
Career
 
In January 2011, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Hồ Xuân Sơn was elected as a member of the 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Viet Nam. Prior to that time, he was appointed as Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam in July 2008, and then First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the National Boundary Commission, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam. 
 
Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Hồ Xuân Sơn started his diplomatic career in 1978, working as Desk Officer, the China Department (now the Northeast Asia Department), Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam.
 
From July 1980 to September 1983, he served as Interpreter at the Embassy of Viet Nam in China. Back to Viet Nam in October 1983, he worked as Desk Officer, the China Department (now the Northeast Asia Department) and the Research and Policy Planning Department (now the Policy Planning Department), Ministry of Foreign Affairs until October 1989.
 
He was appointed as Second Secretary from 1989 to 1993 and Minister Counselor from 1996 to 2000 at the Embassy of Viet Nam in China.
 
Between 1994 and 1996, he acted as Deputy General Director, the Asia 1 Department (now the Northeast Asia Department), Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
 
In the period of 2000-2007, he assumed the positions of Deputy Director General, the Policy Planning Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then Director General, the Asia 1 Department (now the Northeast Asia Department), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and worked as Consul General at the Consulate General of Viet Nam in Hong Kong for his 2004-2007 diplomatic term.
 
In December 2007, he was appointed as Vice Chairman of the National Boundary Commission, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In March 2014, he was assigned as Chairman of the Working Committee on Foreign Non-Governmental Organizations.
 
Awards and honours
 
In his diplomatic career, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Hồ Xuân Sơn has been conferred with many awards of high distinction, namely the Third Class Labor Order in 2011 for outstanding contribution in the delimitation and demarcation of land border between Viet Nam and China, contributing to the cause of socialism building and national safeguarding; the Prime Minister’s Certificate of Merit in 2014 for important contribution to realizing political policy tasks in 2012 and 2013, contributing to the cause of  socialism building and national safeguarding; and the Prime Minister’s Certificate of Merit in 2012 for excellent performance, contributing to the cause of socialism building and national safeguarding.
