The two countries have signed a number of important agreements such as the Agreement on Cultural Cooperation (1957); Agreement on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (1958); the Friendship and Cooperation Treaty (1961); Agreement on Trade and Maritime (1962); Agreement of mutual assistance on medical services (1966); Agreement of visa exemption for diplomatic and official passport holders (1969); Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance (2002); Agreement of cooperation on civil air transportation (1977); Agreement for the Promotion and Protection of Investment (2002); Agreement on double taxation avoidance (2002).
Political relations: The two sides have maintained delegation exchanges of ministries and agencies.
Economic relations: The two countries established the Vietnam - DPRK Joint Committee for Economic, Scientific and Technological Cooperation in September 2000. The fourth meeting session was held in Pyongyang from October 15-18, 2001; the fifth session in Hanoi from November 19-20, 2003 and the sixth session in Pyongyang from August 8 to September 9, 2006.
Bilateral trade volume
In 1993, Vietnam exported US$ 35,475 while importing US$ 4.5 million from DPRK; in 1994, Vietnam exported US$ 32,000 and imported US$ 13.8 million. However, since 1996, the two countries almost have not done trade with each other.
The Vietnamese Government gave the DPRK 1000 tons of rice in 2000; 5,000 tons of rice in 2001 and in 2002, 1,000 tons of rice and 5 tons of rubber in 2005.
In the 1960’s and 1970’s the DPRK helped train hundreds of Vietnamese students. Every year, the Ministry of Culture and Information of Vietnam sends artistic troupes to attend the Spring Arts Festival, which is held annually in Pyongyang.
