Seminar held on contemporary Viet Nam and Norway

Ha Noi (VNA) - Democracy is considered as a target and a motivating force in Viet Nam's renewal process, National Assembly Vice Chairman Nguyen Van Yeu told participants in the "Contemporary Viet Nam and Norway" seminar in Ha Noi on Tuesday.


He continued: "The achievements gained during the democratization of social life have actively contributed to the national renewal process over the past 20 years. The founding of a socialist country in Viet Nam was an important step for the development of the whole society in which the expansion of democracy is the main focus. The people, primarilyworking people, become the owners of the society and sole supreme holder of the State power."


Norwegian Foreign Minister Jan Petersen said that Norway's democratic model is marked by the state's pioneer role in distributing social welfares. Norway is also a well-organised democracy of volunteer and working organisations whose independent status help themselves to make active contributions to the society.


The minister emphasized that the international legal system should be strengthened to ensure equal interests for each nation, creating a sustainable foundation for social welfare and economic growth.


Jan Petersen praised Viet Nam's efforts in international integration, especially in bidding to join the World Trade Organisation.


The minister spoke highly of Viet Nam's impressive economic growth and its efforts in poverty reduction, State management, and the development of its legal system.


The seminar heard scientific reports on democracy and the current State of the law, as well as the role of civil society and mass organizations in exercising democratic rights  in Viet Nam.
