PetroVietnam's opened an international bidding

ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT BY MR. LE DZUNG, THE SPOKESMAN

OF THE VIETNAMESE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS ON 21st OCTOBER 2004

AFP and REUTERS: Please advise Vietnam’s reaction to news that China criticized Vietnam for inviting bids for oil exploration in the Spratlys islands, saying that Vietnam violated China’s sovereignty and sea rights.

Answer:

To my knowledge, PetroVietnam has opened an international bidding for blocks from 122 to 130. Bidding invitation is posted at Pettro Vietnam website: /www.petrovietnam.com.vn. It should be affirmed that these 9 blocks are located totally on the continental shelf of Vietnam within the sovereignty right of Vietnam.
