Remarks by Foreign Ministry Spokesman on US House passage of H.R.1410 and H.Res.484

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Luong Thanh Nghi on September 13, 2012 made the following remark in response to question from the media regarding the September 11 passage by the US House of Representatives of “Vietnam Human Rights Act of 2012” (H.R.1410) and a resolution “calling on the Government of Viet Nam to respect human rights” (H.Res.484):

“Respecting, protecting and promoting the rights of the people are a consistent policy of Viet Nam. Over the years, Viet Nam has gained many achievements in guaranteeing rights of her people in civil, political, economic, cultural and social spectrum, which have been recognized by international community. That human rights are promoted and the people engage actively in all socio-economic activities of the country has become crucial factors to the successes of Doi Moi reform in Viet Nam.

Viet Nam - US relations have seen positive progresses. The two countries have regularly talked in frank, constructive manner and on mutual respect about different issues of common interests, including the issue of human rights. That is the best vehicle to bettering the mutual understanding, abridging differences and contributing to enhancement of the bilateral relations in the interest of Viet Nam and the US.

H.R.1410 and H.Res.484 are made up on false, biased information on human rights practice in Viet Nam. Passing them is wrong and is against the trend of Viet Nam-US relations.”
